June 05 2024 Update

New project: Designspace Dragon!

Heyo!

I’ve got quite a few new things here for this latest update. Let’s have a look!

Designspace Dragon

I whipped this up after seeing color variable fonts, and I couldn’t help but think of the idea of a little dragon where you could tweak the leg height, body width, fatness, wing size, etc. So I made it! Rather quickly though (like in two days), and there’s plenty of issues, but hopefully you enjoy it!

Heyo, future Melvian here! I took this project down in January 2025, more information can be found where the project used to be.

New animations

- this is my take on whack-a-mole (April 2024)

- cloud computing (April 2024)

- computers were never made for hands (May 2024)

- this is immensely stupid (May 2024)

As usual, I have process details and behind-the-scenes videos for all four of them. If you’d like to see my animations as I finish them, follow me on the Fediverse!

New cursors

I’ve added some custom cursors to my website, which I hope you enjoy as much as I do! It’s recently dawned upon me that cursors are a really cool yet very overlooked opportunity to further reinforce the vibe of your website.

Typography-related adjustments

Melvian Sans, the typeface used for this website, also got some notable updates:

  1. I’ve respaced the lowercase a bit as I noticed there were some spacing issues regarding the a and g, which are notoriously difficult to space in general but especially given some design decisions I made for this typeface.
  2. Some of the curves and proportions of a couple letters were adjusted, inspired by a harsh but super constructive critique by a professional type designer on a different typeface of mine.

Hopefully I didn’t make things worse?? Type design is hard sometimes.

Illustration tweak

The illustration for Misconceptions I had about “art” has been largely redone. The background is less contrasty and the head is at a better angle. There is something to be said about never being fully satisfied with your art, but I never really liked the illustration at all.

My standalone animations, in a way, serve as the history of my own personal progression, so it doesn’t feel right to go back and change my work unless I consider it a new animation. But writings are intended to be continually updated, and this is an illustration for a writing. Therefore I feel justified in this tweak.

Anything else?

Well, that’s pretty much all. I’ll keep cranking out animations (my goal is to get 24 done by the end of this year), and I’ll keep working on new projects.

Until next time!
